Quirky Bathroom Signs Some of Which Take Gender Stereotypes to Another Level

XX and XY Chromosomes

These bathroom signs tried to differentiate between the two genders using popular drink choices for men and women: a beer and a martini. The design choice may seem like a broad generalization and can even be offensive to some, but it's hard not to chuckle just a little bit.

According to research observing data on how men and women drink differently, men usually prefer beers, while women prefer fruity drinks like wine more. But those results are likely unreliable since most men don't want to sport a 'girly cocktail' in their hand. We're sure the bathroom sign job, but given the outdated gender stereotypes, it could probably use an update.

Beer & Martinis

These bathroom signs tried to differentiate between the two genders using popular drink choices for men and women: a beer and a martini. The design choice may seem like a broad generalization and can even be offensive to some, but it's hard not to chuckle just a little bit.

According to research observing data on how men and women drink differently, men usually prefer beers, while women prefer fruity drinks like wine more. But those results are likely unreliable since most men don't want to sport a 'girly cocktail' in their hand. We're sure the bathroom works, but given the outdated gender stereotypes, it could probably use an update.

Speaking Doors

Here's another example of a design failing despite its simple inspiration that plays on an age-old gender stereotype. While misled notions about which gender is more talkative are still prevalent among many cultures, others find them highly offensive and inaccurate.

One could call this a classic depiction of the phrase 'men are from Mars, and women are from Venus.' And while they are indeed very different in their thoughts and actions, speaking in too many or too few words is not one of those differences. A Harvard University study suggests that men may, in fact, talk more than women, depending on the context and setting.

Gender Inclusivity

This bathroom sign is to the point and offers no comic relief whatsoever. But what it does is even better: creating gender-neutral spaces in public. The little icons on the door not only include straight men and women but also take into account the LGBTQ+ community and any other differently-abled people that wish to use the facility.

The need for such welcoming and open spaces for all kinds of human beings is ever-increasing, where people can feel safe and welcome. Having gender-neutral and inclusive spaces in the workplace also makes the employees feel included and adds to the company's diversity.

More Than Just Animals

Branding for businesses has always been about wits. But some of them make things even more enjoyable with intelligent and humorous signs like the one in the picture above. Using wildlife as the symbols for telling restrooms apart might seem quite odd, but things get interesting when those animals are a cat and a rooster.

Any other expression of the message here would have come across as overtly vulgar and offensive. These guys made sure to remove the distasteful part of this joke to create something iconic. If this didn’t make you laugh, then you probably missed the reference altogether.

Next Level Inclusion

Brands that pay attention to details are likelier to stay on their customers' minds much longer than their competition. Here's one with a large percentage of sci-fi fans in their clientele and has decided to make a trip to the restroom more fun for everyone.

If you saw that someone had replaced the bathroom labels with small illustrations of superheroes, wouldn't that excite you? It can also provide excellent comic relief. R2-D2 being on the sign shows that this is not just a fun brand but also an inclusive one. Not all restrooms keep the different-abled community in mind, so props to these guys.

Restroom Etiquette

Whoever made this clever bathroom sign wanted to do more than differentiate which room is for whom. It also reminds the users of a very popular and widely accepted etiquette. The toilet seat illustrations remind male users to leave the toilet seat up for the next person as a courtesy, while female users keep it closed for the same reason.

For those who already know of this practice, the illustrations are enough to show them the right door to use. However, for those unaware of this, there are also small inscriptions of ‘w’ and ‘m’ there to do the job.

The Difference is in the Details

It might seem vague when we say no two things are precisely the same. However, simple details can make a huge difference in reality. The bathroom sign above shows two similar images that are only slightly different, but that slight dissimilarity is enough to show everyone who sees it what they need to know.

There's a chance that one might not see the distinction looking at it from afar. But since they need to get close enough to use the restroom anyway, it doesn't affect the message it was supposed to pass. It is clear enough to see from up close.

Everyone Drinks Beer

The perfect metaphor might just be these two pictures used as the bathroom signs at a bar. Drinking lots of beer will make anyone want to use the restroom a few times. So, if they're too intoxicated to read, they would hopefully still understand beer humor.

With each bottle mimicking what it would look like when answering nature's call for each gender, anyone would quickly know which restroom to use. It's not just a perfect illustration but a smart one. This sign will not only tell patrons where to go but also remind them why they may feel too drunk.

Women Are Always Right

There are many ways to tell restrooms apart, but this business decided to give their customers a good laugh and even a piece of advice while they are at it. Anyone in a relationship with a female would probably agree with more than just the direction of these restrooms when they read this sign.

Women are always right, and there aren’t many people who will disagree with that fact. The ladies all already agree, and so do most sensible men. This sign is a combination of humor and targeted wisdom, the kind that is particularly important for married men to accept.

A Blast from the Past

''Popeye the Sailor Man'' fans would light up at the sight of this bathroom signage. This cartoon classic from the '30s was about the wisecracking sailor, Popeye. He famously consumes a can of spinach to gain the strength he needs to save his girlfriend, Olive Oyl, from Bluto, the series villain.

The iconic couple was adapted into this restroom signage for customers who have seen Popeye while demarcating which room is for men and which one is for women. Those who didn't see Popeye might not find the signs nostalgic and smile-worthy, but for those who did, this one is delightful a trip down memory lane.

Which One Are You?

You're either one or the other, a chick or a chick magnet. Whichever describes you, this sign will make you giggle when you visit the restroom. However, some people would argue that the choice of words is a little confusing, as it does not really say which bathroom is specifically for male users.

The facility owners may have thought a traditional approach would be best for their restroom signage humor. One can probably only interpret this right when approaching it from a conventional perspective. So, chicks would mean the women's restrooms, while the chick magnets would mean access to the men's toilets.

Bathroom Motivation

This restroom sign not only contains simple male and female body illustrations that show what side is for whom, it even goes a little further. A witty quote below reminds visitors that sometimes, great ideas come in the most unexpected places, including the facilities that lie beyond this door.

Although we agree with the quote, we are still a little confused if the signage encourages people to visit the restroom more often or get all their thinking done there. While it's not possible to settle that debate, at least we can all agree that everyone's had a great idea in the toilet at least once.

How The Bow Fits

There is no limit to how different people can apply symbolism to bathroom signs. We're sure this sign would take some people a couple of seconds to crack, but when you finally get it, it will be worth it. Did you get it?

The symbolism here draws inspiration from the fact that both men and women wear bows differently. Women usually wear them on their heads, while men wear them around their necks. However, we feel like this one needs quite a bit of explaining before most folks get the idea. This picture is of a restroom in Berlin; perhaps this way of differentiating toilets is common there.

Fruity Signs

People have likened food and fruits to different human body parts for as long as anyone can remember. The practice is widespread and generally understood regardless of language or origin. So, thanks to how symbols can often transcend language barriers, this business thought it'll be perfect for their restroom signages.

You may not be thinking about fruits when you go to the restroom, but the pictures on these doors will help you ensure you're not in the wrong room. Another thing they will certainly do is make one laugh because, frankly, one doesn't expect the message to be as straightforward as this is.

The Importance of Toilet Paper

It is interesting how easily one can change the meaning of a statement. The simple addition of toilet paper to the quote in the frame above is an example. Those who have mastered how to do this are rare, just like the person who made this frame.

While the quote reminds us to cherish what we have before losing it, it also reminds us to value toilet paper, given the location. Those who experienced the scarcity of toilet paper during the lockdown in 2020 already understand this message too well. This one sure looks like fun to have hanging in one's restroom.

When You Can’t Hold It In Anymore

The people in this signage need to relieve themselves as soon as possible. There is a high chance that this restroom sign will make anyone approaching laugh at first sight. Although laughing out loud while one also really needs to answer nature's call is never without its dangers.

Anyone who's ever experienced that position knows how precarious one's situation is at such times. The accuracy of this sign is both hilarious and mind-blowing. It also makes learning which restroom to use super fast since people often have to go immediately. For anyone that comes across this sign, we hope they make it inside without laughing too much.

All Lives Matter

Typically, most establishments have restrooms for the male and female genders. While this is reasonable, it does not necessarily cater to everyone. However, there have been some positive and progressive improvements in recent years. Some places have created a more inclusive environment for various marginalized groups.

This toilet sign is a perfect example of such inclusion. It is not just inclusive but also very creative and reassuring, all in one. It's sad but true that in our modern society, such establishments are among the select few welcoming places for so many people who never feel comfortable going to most public restrooms.

Ghost Town

We can only imagine what kind of facility would use such imagery to label their restrooms. But we admit that it is impossible to miss the message here. The figures on both sides are clear enough to show which toilet is for men and which one is for women.

We can also agree that this might scare any easily spooked patrons. Do ghosts use the restroom too? We're not sure, but we also don't want to find out. If anyone gets scared while using this bathroom, remember that it's most likely joking around. Speaking of which, this seems like a perfect place to play a prank on an unsuspecting friend.

Smart or Knot?

Whoever thought of this sign must be a creative genius. It is not very common to see a bathroom sign like this one. One could argue that it is the first and only of its kind. This establishment has labeled its restroom doors in a way that is more symbolic than most.

Someone has knotted the ropes on each door into a visual representation of the male and female reproductive organs. So, one only needs to quickly make a mental reference to what they're working with, and they'll know where to go. Those that enjoy such humor may even find it funnier than most.

Where The Plug Fits

This restroom sign is a very elaborate and creative work of art, although the details are almost too intricate for mere signage. There is a high chance that one might confuse it as the entryway to a music room or a home recording studio. However, the sign 'WC' above does tell us that there is a restroom behind those doors.

The graphic team's choice of cable wire connectors, which come with two types of heads that fit together to 'connect,' was indeed a funny way to differentiate between genders. Furthermore, their choice of a limited color palette also makes this restroom sign a refreshing change from the norm.

Skiers in Slovakia

These artistic signages on the restrooms at a Slovakian ski resort are more than just symbolic. They show very literal miniature representations of male and female skiers on each door, but that is not all. Each character seems carefully made to sport a confident, happy and satisfied face while doing their business.

Another unique element is the skis around the figures. They show that they love the sport to the extent that they would go to the bathroom with their equipment on. This is truly a friendly and creative way to pass a simple message of hospitality, especially in a place like a restroom.

How To Use The Restroom

Aside from being a candid bathroom sign with the labels reading “ladies” and “gentlemen,” there are also short messages for both men and women in plain but very descriptive language. The tone seems a little aggressive, but we guess the staff included it in response to times when customers left a horrible mess in the restroom.

A gentle reminder never hurts; with the right choice of words, one can convey any sentiment. To avoid the unnecessary mess, this establishment decided to explain how to use each bathroom properly on the respective restroom doors so that everyone could read it before going about their business.

Look Above the Chaos

Bathrooms are easy to find in most places. So, one can quickly go and come back when they want. In some areas, however, locating the restroom can soon become an unpleasant experience, especially when you need one in a hurry. One of such places is the arcade.

For anyone long-immersed in their game at the arcade, looking away to see all the flashing neon lights and gaming noises can push their mind into confusion. This arcade must have considered this when deciding to make those easily visible and adorable signs above the restroom doors. Something tells us Ms. Pacman is one of the favorites at this establishment.

A Pie Surprise

There is a very daring and novel take on restroom signs. Clearly, this pizza parlor is keeping things on-brand with the labels on their bathroom doors. Many artists have used fruits as metaphors for human bodies. However, we've never seen pizza used in a similar context before.

We can assume that the single piece references men while the other is for women. There is no supporting or descriptive text in the signs might make these even a little challenging to decipher. So while many people might find the analogy surprising, this is much more likely to confuse most of them.

The Simpsons in the Bathroom

"The Simpsons" has got to be one of the most beloved shows in the U.S. and many other places worldwide. The hilarious animated sitcom started in 1989 and has continued to win and warm hearts worldwide. Seeing Homer and Marge on restroom doors would definitely tickle a fan's fancy.

The message is clear, but even more hilarious is that the drawing shows this iconic couple with most of their clothes off. Marge seems freshly showered, but Bart looks like he'd instead drink beer and watch TV. Those who've seen the show have a high chance they'll remember their favorite scenes and keep smiling even in the restroom.

May the Force Be With You

For a movie franchise over three decades old, there is nowhere that ''Star Wars'' has not appeared. The restroom is the only place one might not expect the film's imagery to feature. But that is precisely where the signs in the picture above are displayed.

The figures in the sign reference two of the arguably most popular characters from ''Star Wars'' to show the visitors which restroom to use based on gender. For fans, this would probably put a smile on their faces. And even for those who haven't seen the movie, the sign clearly shows which restroom to use.

Cultural References

Some places have some cultural references that can not be seen anywhere randomly. Australians are used to calling women Sheila’s and calling men Blokes. So, this signage on the restroom was used to show which gender should use which restroom, and also as a cultural reference.

When people get to the restroom in this building, there will definitely laugh. If you are a fan of culture, this might interest you a little more than it will interest others. And as interesting as it might sound, some people may only get the message by looking at the gender of the people in the sign.

Mixed Signals

These restroom doors have got a lot going on. One side has a woman's limbs, while the other depicts a man with the same appendages stretched out. Had this been all, it would be easy to know which bathroom to enter.

However, both doors also display a hand pointing at each other. The signs on this entryway may be visually appealing, but they are also confusing. In a crowded and busy bar, many inebriated customers might spend a lot of time trying to decipher which room to enter. And it might be too late if they cannot decide in time.

Shifting Focus

One never knows what they might discover in the restroom when visiting a new place. We doubt anyone spends their free time thinking about restroom labels, but even if they did, it's unlikely they would have thought of this sign.

The owners of this building have decided to pass a more critical message of healthiness and inclusion on their restroom signs. They don't care if their patrons identify as male, female, or even mythical creatures; they want to ensure everyone using the restroom washes their hands. We must admit this level of inclusivity, with the sole focus being good personal hygiene, is the way to go.

By Their Shoes We Shall Know Them

The creative possibilities when brainstorming for restroom signage are almost endless. Different establishments keep coming up with genius ways to convey simple instructions to anyone looking for a restroom. These guys have chosen to nail footwear on their restroom doors to show which one men should use and which women should use.

This creative and out-of-the-box display is pretty unusual but still impossible to misunderstand. Although the staff might think this was a fun way to make their patrons smile on their way to the restroom, we can't help but think that signboards might have required less effort. Who's going to polish and clean these attached to the door anyway?

Inspired by Mickey Mouse

Mickey Mouse is a famous cartoon series created by Walt Disney as far back as 1928. Although it ended in 1955, some additional episodes have also aired in the years since. Mickey and Minnie, the show's stars, have been seen in many artistic representations across the nation for years, especially in street graffiti. However, someone took it a step further by using the beloved characters on this restroom label.

The owners of this facility have chosen a straightforward design. There's a cute polka-dot dress and bow for Minnie leading to the women's restroom doorway, while Mickey is on the right for the men's room. Disney fans would definitely love this.

Facial Hair Recognition

These restroom doors are similar but slightly different in their signs. They both have smiley faces, but one emphasizes mustache hair while the other highlights the hair on the eyelashes. The design team has emphasized these features to differentiate masculine from feminine, helping guests figure out which restroom to use.

While the signs might give a stereotypical view of what men and women look like, the message is still unambiguous. But considering how women can also have a peachy fuzz above their lip lines and many men sport long and luscious lashes, this concept seems somewhat dated and not inclusive.

Home Alone Fandom

Some of the most dedicated and loyal pop culture fans are in America. Hit TV Shows, animated series, and movie franchises have created many communities across the country. One of those is "Home Alone," the 1990 movie about a mischievous boy who was forgotten at home when his family went on vacation.

This sign references a scene in the first Home Alone movie where the protagonist, Kevin McCallister, quotes a line from Angels With Dirty Faces, adopting the latter part "…ya filthy animal!" Regularly washing our hands is crucial for our health and others, especially after using the restroom, and this sign will ensure one doesn't forget.

Save the Press

Here's a toilet sign that hides a funny message in plain sight. Everyone knows the commode could get clogged when flushing things such as tampons, paper towels, or newspapers. All these usually render the toilet unusable, so it is important not to dispose of them like that. This establishment had to post the message on the restroom wall for some people to stop doing it.

Their message also possibly contains a dig at one of the United Sates' most prolific newspapers. Either someone flushed their copy down the toilet out of disgust, or this is a not-so-subtle way of comparing the newspaper with toilet paper.
